Keeping track of all the latest video games being released is an increasingly complex task. Need to keep track of multiple PC storefronts, Xbox One, PS4, Switch, mobile, and more? Don't worry. I'll help you. . Every month, we'll introduce you to the most noteworthy matches, from the big Triple-A headliners to the indies you might have missed.
After a surprisingly busy February and March, April will be a bit of a breather, but there are still a few things to look forward to. Sony's smooth action game “Stella Blade'' and “Sand Land'', inspired by Akira Toriyama, are scheduled to appear. On the indie side, players can look to his latest Devolver collaboration Children of the Sun, his gorgeous stop-motion adventure game Harold Halibut, and more.
Note: I may have played demos or had early access to some of the games recommended in this article, but for the most part I'm just picking games that look promising. We cannot guarantee the final product. Please wait for reviews before purchasing!
That said, here are the games to watch in April…
The Headliners
Sand Land (PC, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 & PS5, April 26th)
Akira Toriyama, who recently passed away, left behind a very rich gaming legacy, including the Dragon Quest series and numerous Dragon Ball anime adaptations, but his lesser-known Sand Kingdom series has been adapted into a game. This is the first time it has happened. An open-world action RPG in which you can pilot a number of unique vehicles, Sand Land is basically his Mad Max with a charming anime twist. You can check out Wccftech's hands-on impressions of the game here. You can pre-order Sandland here.
Stellar Blade (PS5, April 26th)
The Korean-developed action game Stellar Blade, originally known as Project Eve, gained attention for its striking visuals and the fact that Sony is backing and publishing the project. Stellar Blade's skimpy (and not-so-cooperative) costume has raised a few eyebrows, but the game's high-octane Platinum Games combination of his style of stylish action and impressive technology , is undeniably fascinating. You can reserve Stella Blade here.
TopSpin 2K25 (PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 & PS5, April 26th)
The Top Spin games are a popular series of tennis games from the glory days of 2K Sports, but unfortunately, the series has been dormant for over a decade. Well, he'll be on court again this month at TopSpin 2K25. Mafia developer Hangar 13 is in charge, which makes sense since Top Spin's previous developer also absorbed 2K Czech. Whether this will be a successful comeback remains to be seen, but at this point tennis fans are hungry for just about everything. You can pre-order TopSpin 2K25 here.
promising indie
Children of the Sun (PC, April 9)
There are a lot of shooters out there, but when was the last time you played as a bullet? Children of the Sun is a high-concept, stylish indie sniper game. There's only one bullet per level, and once you find the right vantage point to shoot it, you can manipulate its trajectory to take out multiple targets. This is the latest Devolver Digital publishing collaboration, so we know it's probably spot on. This is the Steam page for “Children of the Sun”.
Harold Halibut (PC, Xbox Series X/S & PS5, April 16)
For a brief period in the '90s, there was a spate of games like Neverhood that used stop-motion style visuals to impressive effect, but that trend eventually faded, perhaps because stop-motion was so labor-intensive. It withered. Now, a new indie adventurer, Harold Halibut, is bringing back his stop-motion game and, in fact, taking it to a new level. Older games of this style were simple claymation efforts, but Harold Halibut looks like the more complex work of Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline). Harold Halibut's Steam page is here.
Tales of Kensela: Zau (PC, Xbox Series X/S, PS5 & Switch, April 23)
Tales of Kenzera: Zau is a sleek-looking new Metroid that takes inspiration from both African Bantu culture and the personal life of the game's creative director, Abubakar Salim (also the voice of Bayek in the Assassin's Creed games) This is Vania. This is the latest publication from the highly proven EA Originals label, so it's definitely a story worth hearing. This is the Steam page for Tales of Kenzera: Zau.
