KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Maggie Tyson Airport is expecting an increase in people traveling to and from the area as the spring break season begins.
According to the TSA, travel volume in 2024 is on track to increase by nearly 6% compared to the same period in 2023. The peak crowding of the spring break travel season is expected to last until March 25th.
“We average approximately 120 flights to and from the airport each day, and approximately 15,000 people have used the airport over the past three days. We expect that traffic to continue to increase,” said Maggie Tyson Airport. said spokeswoman Becky Huckabee. “YoY-year growth in passenger numbers has stalled for the 11th consecutive month. Therefore, we expect this situation to continue during this holiday season.”
To ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip, McGhee Tyson suggests following these tips.
- Please arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before your scheduled departure time.
- Be prepared for long lines at TSA security checkpoints during peak travel hours
- Use TSA's prohibited items list to pack correctly and make sure your luggage is the right size for carry-on luggage.
- If you're picking us up at the airport, use our toll-free phone & waiting lot instead of waiting at the curb or circling the airport.
This increase in travel is due to Maggie Tyson closing a portion of its long-term parking lot for a parking garage expansion project. This is the first of many construction projects aimed at accommodating the airport's growth. Plans are underway to add six new gates to the concourse. His target completion date for this project is 2028.
“We're really seeing an increase in the number of daily flights as well as an increase in passenger numbers, and the airlines that have historically served our market are introducing larger planes. Our community is really growing, and our airport is growing with it,” Huckabee said.
Six airlines currently fly to and from Maggie Tyson: Allegiant Airlines, American Airlines, Avero Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, and United Airlines. Travelers can also check their TSA wait times and parking availability on the website.
