After months of unrest on Harvard's campus amid the Israeli-Hamas war, the law school's student government is calling on Harvard to retreat from “Israeli occupation and genocide.”
The Harvard Law School Student Government Association on Friday issued a statement calling on Harvard Management Corporation to “remove all weapons manufacturers, corporations, academic programs, corporations, and other institutions that support the ongoing illegal occupation of Palestine and the genocide of the Palestinian people. A resolution was passed calling for a complete withdrawal. ”
The resolution also calls on all Harvard University institutions to “disassociate themselves from all institutions, weapons manufacturers, corporations, academic programs, businesses, and others that support the ongoing illegal occupation of Palestine and the genocide of the Palestinian people.” ”.
According to reports, the sale resolution was passed by 12 votes to 3, with four abstentions.
The Cambridge campus has been bitterly divided since the Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attack and the start of the Israel-Hamas war.
Former Harvard University President Claudine Gay resigned earlier this year following explosive congressional testimony about anti-Semitism on campus and allegations of plagiarism against her.
In Gay's testimony, the former president refused to characterize calls for the genocide of Jews as a violation of Harvard's code of conduct. After this shocking hearing, a House of Commons committee announced it would launch an investigation into anti-Semitic incidents at the school.
Pro-Palestinian student groups celebrated Friday's vote on the resolution.
“The Harvard Law School Student Government has passed resolution R.-207-001 calling on the Harvard Management Corporation and all institutions and organizations in the Harvard University community to withdraw from Israeli occupation and genocide. “Law student seeking freedom for Palestine” posted.
A Harvard University spokesperson declined to comment on the resolution Friday.
Student groups pointed out that Harvard has retreated from other interests in the past. For example, Harvard University announced it would divest its endowment from fossil fuels in 2021.
“Divestment is urgent and necessary,” said an anonymous student at Harvard Law School's Justice for Palestine group. “Harvard Management Corporation is warning you. Your students are against it. We call on you to immediately retreat from this genocide.”
