Larian Studios, the developer of 2023's biggest game, Baldur's Gate 3, has announced that it has no plans to create a sequel or additional content for the game.
Larian Studios created the entire Baldur's Gate video game set in the Forgotten Realms, a high fantasy setting adapted from the second edition rules of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D). Larian's first release was his 1998.
This news came as a surprise considering the huge success of 2023's Baldur's Gate 3.This game swept The Game Awards and at least $650 million. The player also spent a huge amount of time playing the game – in total he spent over 8,000 years On the character customization screen alone in the first four months after release.
However, because the game follows D&D lore, Hasbro-owned game publisher Wizards of the Coast owns all D&D intellectual property.
Swen VinkeCEO of Larian told IGN All characters created by Larian “currently belong to Wizards.”
“I hope they respect the tradition and bring in some really good talent, but as far as we're concerned, this chapter is closed. It's over for us,” Vinke told IGN. .
Vinke said the company originally intended to work on creating additional downloadable content for Baldur's Gate 3 because it seemed “natural” given the game's success. After spending time on additional content and having early conversations about a potential Baldur's Gate 4, the studio realized something didn't feel right, Vinke told IGN.
“I could see the team doing it because everyone felt like they had to do it, but it wasn't really from the heart. We knew it was from the heart. All the studios,” Vinke said.
When Winke announced in December that the studio would be moving on from Baldur's Gate to other projects, the staff was “over the moon”.
Producing a video game as large as Baldur's Gate 3 takes a lot of effort for a studio. Baldur's Gate 3 took him six years to develop, with the developer collaborating with his 240 voice actors, before it saw the light of day.
Santa Monica Studios, which produces the popular God of War series, expressed similar concerns about such efforts when it announced it would not produce a direct sequel in 2021.
The studio first released God of War games in 2018. It was also a huge success, dominating The Game Awards as well and selling over 23 million copies. Generate more than $500 million in revenue. Santa Monica immediately began developing God of War: Ragnarok, which was released in 2022 and sold approximately 15 million copies. The studio recently released free downloadable content for the game in December 2023.
Corey Barlog, who directed 2018's God of War. told Gamespot In 2021, we learned that one of the reasons we decided to stop creating content after Ragnarok was because of the huge amount of time it takes to develop a game.
“The first game took five years,” Barlog told Gamespot. “The second game, I don't know how long it's going to take, but I just want to say it's going to take about the same amount of time to do this. And you think, 'Wow, three games. “One eye…” We are talking about one story spanning nearly 15 years.”
Although Larian hasn't created any new content for the game, Vincke told IGN that he still has some content in the works that will be released in future updates, including a new ending cinematic. I spoke.
