NCAA President Charlie Baker said in a statement Wednesday that he wants to ban prop bets in college sports.
“The NCAA draws a line under sports betting to protect student-athletes and protect the integrity of the game. The incidents across the country in recent days show there is still work to be done. “There is,” Baker said.
Prop bets allow fans to bet on a basketball player's points or rebounds, or a football player's yards or touchdowns, instead of or in conjunction with the game outcome or spread. Masu.
Although fans can bet on the outcome of games, prop bets are not allowed in college sports in many of the 38 states where sports betting is legal.
Baker wants to expand its reach to include all states.
“This week, we reached out to state officials across the country that allow these wagers, joining Ohio, Vermont, Maryland and many other states to ensure that college props from all gambling markets. We will request that the bet be removed,” Baker said.
Some players have been the subject of individual harassment if their play resulted in a prop bet against the bettor, regardless of the outcome of the game. Baker previously considered a bill that would create a “prohibited bettor list” of people known to harass players and coaches.
Baker, a former basketball player at Harvard University, has opposed prop bets in college sports since becoming president last March.
“In some ways, I think prop betting is one of the areas I'm most concerned about,” Baker told CBS News in November.
The NBA also announced Monday that Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter is under investigation by the league for alleged betting fraud related to prop bets involving Porter. He left early with an injury in two separate games, which allowed bettors to cash in on multiple prop bets and was the most profitable for bettors on the day, according to a DraftKings media release. .
Loyola's Maryland coach, Tavaras Hardy, resigned earlier this month after Loyola announced it had removed the individual from the program after becoming aware of gambling violations. The Associated Press reported that Hardy was not removed from the program for gambling violations.
US Integrity, a gambling watchdog group employed by many sports leagues and teams, also flagged unusual betting patterns surrounding two Temple University basketball games earlier this year. Last year, the group issued a warning over the activities surrounding Alabama baseball coach Brad Bohannon, who was fired for allegedly giving inside information to a colleague about members who were trying to bet on Alabama baseball.
