Readers name five of the most boring and unoriginal games of recent years, including Days Gone and Watch Dogs Legion.
The standards of the video game world have now reached such a level that, at least when it comes to big-budget games, it's no secret that the graphics are completely terrible and the controls and gameplay aren't at least reasonably competent. Very rare.
In fact, the biggest problem these days is that games are bland and boring. I think a lot of this has to do with publishers trying to make their games appealing to as wide an audience as possible. That means making sure nothing is too weird or unpleasant for less adventurous gamers.
This means that not only are most games a copy of something else, or often several other games, but the basic setting and character style is always the same. It's bad enough if it's done well, but if it's done badly, it's just as bland as a game like this…
1. Starfield
One of the strangest big-name releases of recent years, Starfield feels like something out of the Xbox 360 era in terms of design and writing (the graphics aren't great, either, but they're certainly not bad). not). The structure and mission design is horribly boring and repetitive (I can't believe I have to play the temple minigame over and over again), the combat is mostly mediocre, and the whole thing is very blandly written. You are there for the only reason you know. It wasn't done by the AI, it's just that the computer may have accidentally thrown something weird or interesting in there by accident.
All the characters blathering on about their boring personal lives during missions feels boring and almost like a parody. Even worse than that is the whole concept of the game. His sci-fi version of Skyrim sounds great, but why did he make the whole space travel aspect so trivial and all the planets so boring? Starfield is too ambitious It's weird because it's outdated.
2. Outriders
Probably many have already forgotten about this, but it always stood out to me as a perfect example of ruining good gameplay by presenting it in the most bland, uninteresting way possible. . It's basically a cross between Gears Of War and Destiny, but the story is so bland that even after recalling the details on Wikipedia, I still don't remember much about it.
This is a problem seen in many games. The problem isn't that you're not original, it's that your originality isn't original. If you understand. It's fine to copy something like Gears Of War, but find a better way to imitate it than something less good with the exact same setting and art style. There are some magical powers and other things in this game, but none of them are as good as shooting. Sadly, while Outriders was intended to be a live service game, it was far too bland to last long enough to be that.
3. Days Gone
I think what makes people so confused about Sony's current stance is that they were too aggressive with their first-party games last generation, and even in the early stages of this one. Days Gone was a flop, but they knew it and walked away with no sequel. It was exactly the kind of copy-by-numbers game you'd expect from an inexperienced team.
Everything in the game was copied from others, including the horribly over-the-top zombie apocalypse. Copying other games and making them worse is a common problem with all of these games, but Days Gone doesn't even feel like it's trying. The strangest thing is that the only thing that might be interesting, the giant zombie horde, didn't appear until the last few missions. Still, it ends up being disappointingly boring and stupid.
4. Watch Dogs Legion
I had to include a Ubisoft game somewhere on this list, and I was planning on making it an Assassin's Creed game, but I haven't played the last one, so I don't know if the old-fashioned way would have helped. not. However, the one I played was his third one in Watch Dogs, and the second one wasn't too bad either, this time because it's set in London. Needless to say, it didn't help.
Aside from the fact that it's clear that no Brits are involved in this game, it's just the same old boring missions as the open world games, minus the interesting hacking and drone stuff from the previous game. . The worst part is that the game's big gimmick is that literally anyone can play it. That means everyone you play doesn't have the right personality or backstory. They say that if you get bored with London, you get bored with life, but that definitely doesn't include virtual life.
5. Saints Row
I debated whether to include this in the list because I don't want to kick anyone who's down, considering the developer is no longer around, but I wonder what they were thinking with this? It's been almost 10 years since GTA 5, but this game still doesn't live up to that game. Since GTA 5 is essentially an Xbox 360 game, New Saints of His Law should have at least surpassed it in graphics, but it fell short.
And what about combat and driving? GTA isn't even good at those things and this is even worse. Driving on the freeways in Saints Row is a very bland and uninspiring experience, like knocking other cars off the road like Skittles. The mission design is boring and I have no idea what's going on in the story, but was it meant to make me hate all the main characters? But then again, the game can't even turn that unpleasantness into something memorable.
