World Wildlife Fund, in collaboration with Finance Earth and corporate partners, is working to develop the Fisheries Improvement Fund concept, an innovative blue finance mechanism, with the aim of reversing global trends in fisheries decline. It's done. Sustainable finance is essential to scaling up the transition to more sustainable fisheries. We need new models that are efficient, fair and cost-effective for key stakeholders. We’d love to hear about the launch of this new fund model. Industry collaborators in this effort include leading feed companies Cargill Inc., Skretting, and BioMar Group, which are working extensively on the conceptual development and launch of this model. Additionally, this effort is supported by large seafood buyers Costco Wholesale, Walmart through the Walmart Foundation, and Mars Incorporated. All of them are WWF partners who promote more sustainable seafood production globally and directly support fisheries improvement projects. They believe this work is important for scaling up fisheries improvement globally in an efficient and effective manner.
Central to this effort is the increasingly compelling case for companies to incorporate the costs of sustainability and resource viability into their business models. Participating companies are working with WWF and Finance Earth to test the concept and create a financing mechanism for fisheries improvement that is fair and embeds the cost of sustainability into the cost of doing business.
