When I started watching Fallout shows, the cavalcade of direct references to the Fallout games made me feel like a super long YouTube skit called “What would happen if video games became real? (Crazy!!!)” I was worried that it would feel like this.
It didn't feel that way in the end, mainly because the storytelling is good enough and the references to video games aren't from the show. the meaning to exist. But on further thought, I also realized that YouTube skits can be pretty funny if done well, so why not create a show based on a series known for its goofy video game conventions? Why not try putting all your effort into the gag?
I'm used to video game logic, so some of the gags in the Fallout series I didn't even realize were gags until they were pointed out to me. So we pooled our brains to identify the most video game-y moments across his eight episodes of the show. We've listed what we came up with below.
Spoilers followObviously, it includes moments from every episode. I'm sure I've missed some good ones, so if you can think of any, please leave them in the comments.
● Lucy introduces herself by explaining her repair, science, and public speaking skills.
●When the main character tries to have sex, it gets cut.
● The first house Lucy wanders into in the wasteland has a family of skeletons at the dinner table in classic Bethesda environmental storytelling style.
● Knight Titus does what everyone does when they first encounter a high-level enemy in power armor. “Ah, ah, ah” and run away.
● Lucy casually walks up to the Wastelander while pointing her gun at him.
● Ghoul clearly uses VATS to target body parts (Wilzig's feet) and cycles/pre-targets multiple enemies in mare firefights (obviously also has the Bloody Mess perk) …
● …and Maximus sticks the power armor onto the level geometry.
● Ma June gives Lucy a quest and adds a marker to her Pip-Boy map
● In Vault 33, after losing the election, Woody complains that he should have put up 10 posters. It's like a quest for him to put up 10 posters.
● Chet and Norm discover bloody but highly legible graffiti scrawled on the wall in front of Vault 31's door. “We know what's out there.” A classic video game doodle.
● Lucy accesses shocking video logs on her device and learns the history of Vault 4
● Vault 4's blackboard displays only the most relevant information in large font.
● Thaddeus' injuries are completely cured by taking what is essentially a health potion (though there is one very noticeable side effect).
● Norm runs a Fallout hacking minigame that accesses the Inter-Vault Messaging system.
● The climax of the show is the “Protect the generator while it's running'' encounter.
● Ghouls appear to be using VATS again to target weaknesses in power armor
● A cutscene with a very long speech (flashback) by the villain answers (almost) all your questions
● No matter what choices you make while watching, the ending will be the same 😜
