It's that time of year again: the shorelines of the Amalfi and Dalmatian coasts welcome sunbathers, spritzes are served at outdoor cafés, and pedestrians throng the charming medieval towns. I travel to Europe every summer, and despite the crowds, I never tire of looking at the caldera at sunset in Santorini, the whitewashed buildings of Puglia, or people-watching along the street from my favorite French bistro.
As a travel writer, I've watched Europeans embrace the summer in effortlessly chic fashions, from neutral linens to cottons with colorful silk accents and tailored blazers. Their stylish wardrobe has served me well in my own travels over the years, wearing fabrics light enough to withstand long days of walking and battling the summer heat and crowds.
I've also learned to pack more mindfully, with an itinerary in mind, each time I travel. On a recent visit to Verona and dining in Michelin-star chef Giancarlo Perbellini's renowned open kitchen, I was so glad I had loose-waisted pants that could get a few stains when the seventh delicious course was brought to the table. On a particularly rainy day walking the magnificent grounds of the Hotel Royal Victoria on Lake Como, a good pair of grippy sneakers saved my Italian travel dreams from turning into a nightmare that ended with a bad fall and a trip to the hospital. More proof that small choices when packing can add up to big savings later.
Below are some of our favorite travel companions for your trip to Europe, from tried-and-true packing cubes and portable fans to breathable one-piece swimsuits for beach days and versatile clothing that can take you from day to night.
Linen shirt dress
Summer days call for comfortable fabrics. Made from 100% eco-friendly linen fibers, this shirt dress from Quince is breathable and lightweight. Two pockets make it easy to store things. Dress it up with a belt or throw it on for the beach. Part of Quince's recently launched European line, this scoop-neck midi dress comes in a variety of colors from blue pinstripe to martini olive, making it perfect for city walks, sightseeing tours, and any other itinerary.
Portable Fan
As temperatures soar in Europe every summer, a portable fan is a must-have for both outdoors and indoors (remember, most Europeans don't use air conditioning). This nifty option from Duolz has five speeds and a battery life of up to 12 hours. A nice perk of this fan is that it comes with an aromatherapy tablet that you can place inside to release a relaxing scent. It can be used as a handheld device or propped up against a surface with its foldable, neck-hanging design. The LED light display shows you how much power is left, so you won't be surprised when it's time to charge.
Breathable shorts
Fanka, known for their breathable activewear, brings you these sculpting bike shorts made with durable stretch fabric. Compression points in the shorts are targeted to reduce blood flow and muscle fatigue, especially during long walks while traveling. I bring these shorts with me on trips where I plan to work out at the hotel gym. I love the 360-degree smooth waistband and snug fabric that doesn't slide down during exercise. I also include Columbia's Konos Outdry Shoes in my training packing checklist whenever I travel. They're waterproof and offer optimal traction, making them especially useful for rainy city days and uphill walking.
Mini Portable Charger
Carrying a mini charger is super useful while traveling abroad, especially on those long walk days when you rely on Google Maps to get to your destination. This mini portable charger power bank from Lanluk is lightweight and small enough to keep in your pocket. I also love that I don't have to carry around a cord to charge my phone. Plus, it's convenient in hotel rooms, Airbnbs, and vacation rentals where outlets are limited. No need to fight with other travelers to charge your devices at the end of the day.
tote bag
The perfect companion for a day at the beach, the Graham Tote from State Bags is a colorful and spacious item perfect for a day in the sun. Made from 100% recycled cotton, this tote features a main compartment that can hold a few books, a laptop, or even shoes, and an interior pocket for your phone or wallet. Away from the beach, it's a great everyday bag or your go-to personal bag for plane rides. It features a trolley pass-through sleeve, so you can slip it onto your luggage handle for hands-free use.
Packing Cubes
On my last trip to Europe, Nine Packing dresses, pants, and shirts into your carry-on is all thanks to the power of packing cubes. This compression set from Bagsmart helps you sort your favorite summer clothes so you don't compromise your wardrobe or forget anything. The cubes come in a variety of sizes and are made from durable polyester that can withstand wear and tear. But what sets them apart from other packing cubes is their removable crossbody strap, which makes them travel-friendly.
One piece swimsuit
I love a classic one-piece swimsuit, and this new one from Vuori does just that with removable cups, a slightly sleeker fit, adjustable straps, and a super handy hip phone pocket to stash your phone. The elastane fabric is stretchy and quick-drying for those hot beach days, and the cut of this swimsuit is versatile enough to wear as a bodysuit or with a skirt or pants.
Beach towel
Light enough to easily pack in your luggage, this beautiful beach towel from Coyuchi features a diamond weave pattern inspired by vintage African ikat textiles, making you feel great wherever you are on the coast. The soft velour and loop terry fabric offers ultimate softness and maximum absorbency. I love the sea mist and persimmon colour options as they remind me of an idyllic day on the Mediterranean. You can also use it as a picnic blanket if needed, or as a bath towel depending on your accommodation.
Travel Wallet
This multi-functional wallet from Calpak is perfect for travelers who prefer an all-in-one organization solution. It keeps your cards and cash safe in designated compartments, and there's even space for your passport (plus additional slots and pouches for a variety of other items you need to store). It's equipped with RFID-blocking lining for security, and a detachable strap means you can wear it as a waist pack, wallet, or clutch. We love the chic crocodile material and color options, including emerald green and cognac brown.
A standout dress
If you're looking for vibrant colors that evoke European seaside adventures, there are plenty of flattering dresses to help you get there. Personally, I love Nigerian designer Andrea Iyamah's summer collection, especially the Tuli Mesh Dress, which has a lightweight bodycon fit and one-shoulder draping that gives off Greek goddess vibes. Currently available for pre-order only, I'd like to introduce you to the Farm Rio White Floral Sketch Midi Dress, which has the same energy. On Amazon, you can get similar styles in the Jessica Crossover Halter Dress and the Brencott Long Sleeve Maxi Dress, both of which retail for under $50.
Relaxed Jeans
Comfortable, breathable jeans are a must-have for any trip to Europe. Paired with a breezy tank top or linen shirt, Mother's cropped denim pants are ankle-length and loose-fitting for any temperature. For a night out, I like to add some color by slipping on Sorel's comfortable Kinetic Wedges and pairing them with my favorite lightweight V-neck blouse from Mother.
Comfortable flat shoes
Having suffered multiple foot injuries after long walks, I'll never choose comfort over cuteness again. When you need something a little dressier, slip into these Melissa Campana flats for casual or glamorous wear. The interwoven cut-out design and cushioned footbed make them comfortable for day or night. If you're looking for a pair that instantly evokes Parisian style, the Madewell Greta Ballet Flats are the way to go. Shoppers rave about how these flats pack down easily, are versatile, and “ready to wear right out of the box.”
MZ Wallace Crosby Crossbody Sling Bag
This classic crossbody bag from MZ Wallace is an all-time favorite of mine. It's always with me, whether it's a long-haul flight, a casual walking tour, or a dressy dinner. This versatility is thanks to the removable crossbody strap, which can be swapped for a fashionable gold-embedded chain strap that adds a touch of class to any outfit. This sling bag is large enough to hold the essentials you need for a day out and can be adjusted to fit comfortably anywhere. Amazon has other equally attractive, stylish, and functional options, including the Anck Checkered Fanny Pack ($30), Cluci Mini Everywhere Crossbody Waist Bag ($25), and Bagsmart Quilted Waist Pack ($20).
Foldable hat
This wide-brimmed straw hat from Amazon-popular brand Ransom folds up for easy storage without taking up too much space in your luggage. It's made from soft, durable materials and is a comfortable style that fits any head size, thanks to an adjustable interior strap. Another fun choice is this Sahara Guide Hat from REI Co-op. Breathable mesh side panels keep you cool, and an adjustable chin strap keeps you from blowing away, which is especially useful in unrelenting summer environments like the Acropolis in Athens or the Colosseum in Rome.
Curel Oil Control Weightless Gel Face Moisturizer
Humid European days can call for a skincare tweak, especially if you're sweating. This gel moisturizer from Curel's recently launched Skin Balancing Care collection, available exclusively on Amazon, fights excess oil and is fragrance-free and oil-free. I always bring it with me when I travel as it provides great hydration without feeling heavy on the skin.
