This is the first of two articles profiling the Democratic candidates for the 131st State House seat.
Merriam-Sabi argues that there are three characteristics of civil servants that some might question.
“I'm caring, hard-working, and a good listener,” Sabi said when evaluating her candidacy. “I like being there in person and meeting people and really addressing their concerns.”
Mr. Sabi hopes to represent District 131 in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. The district includes parts of Lehigh, Northampton, and Montgomery counties. To win the seat, he must first defeat Jayharon Santos in the Democratic primary.
“I've lived in the Lehigh Valley for over 15 years and I've seen it change,” Savi said. “For a long time, Harrisburg didn't have good representation.”
She holds a master's degree in political science from Lehigh University and has been active in local Democratic politics as a committee precinct clerk, poll watcher, and campaign worker. As a journalist, Savi writes about issues such as education, women's rights, and government accountability.
“I believe that access to quality education is essential, and I will continue to work tirelessly to ensure all children have the support and resources they need.”
She is also a “strong supporter” of abortion rights.
“Reproductive rights are under full attack across this country, regardless of a family's individual circumstances or consultation with a doctor,” Sabi said. “We will do everything we can to make sure the woman and her family get the medical care they need.”
Mr Savi said he was the only candidate in District 131 who received support from the family planning system.
“There has been a long history of struggle for women's rights,” she says. “As a woman, I am grateful for their sacrifices. I will ensure that the historic progress that has been made is not withheld. I will continue to ensure that all women have access to the care they need safely. We will continue to strongly and vocally support protecting women's reproductive rights in Pennsylvania, including increasing access to them.”
Sabi also believes the federal government can foster the growth of Pennsylvania's small businesses.
“Government can ease the burden of starting a news business by streamlining the process of starting a new business and tools like high-speed internet across districts,” she said. “When appropriate, the government subsidizes struggling industries and sectors to promote growth. SBA (Small Business Administration) loans are important when available at competitive interest rates.”
Asked how she could help secure more funding for District 131 as a freshman representative, Savi said her goal was in part to build partnerships.
“I look forward to working with my Democratic colleagues to secure more funding and a stronger majority to pass further legislation that reflects our values and addresses the concerns of our constituents,” Sabi said. I'm thinking about it.'' “I will go across the aisle when necessary and work together for the common good.”
Like many Democrats, she supports HB 1220, which increases election transparency, and Governor Shapiro's recent energy proposals.
“I support the principles of tackling climate change by increasing energy independence and creating new jobs in the clean energy industry,” she said. “We have untapped potential in wind and solar power.” “I will take back control by supporting the Pennsylvania Climate Emissions Reduction Act, a new program in Pennsylvania that will lower energy costs for all Pennsylvanians.”
To promote homeownership and combat inflation, Sabi supports “changes in development and tax laws to increase incentives to increase the supply of available housing and reduce burdens on first-time homebuyers.” ing. He added: “We also need smart growth policies that protect the environment while fostering strong local economies.”
Savi said there are lessons to be learned from the incident at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.
“Jean. 6 taught us that we cannot take democracy and freedom for granted,” Saib said in response to a question about the biggest issues facing the 131st District. I spoke as part of it. “They can be violently taken away from us, and we must protect our Constitution and our rights. We must elect people to office who respect these American values. not.”
The primary election is scheduled for April 23rd. Incumbent Republican candidate Milou McKenzie is running as an independent for the party's nomination.
